For the first time in its history, the Littleton/Bromfield boys varsity ice hockey team is heading to the TD Garden. Following a breathtaking postseason run that has pushed their record to 23-1, the Tigers have earned their spot in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 4 State Championship game March 15, where they will face St. Bernard’s for the ultimate crown.
Under Harvard’s own head coach, Kevin Lizotte, the team has been nothing short of clinical throughout the bracket: a 10-0 shutout of Nantucket, a 5-2 win over Pentucket, a 6-1 victory over Martha’s Vineyard, and a come-from-behind 5-1 final four victory over Dover-Sherborn/Weston last weekend. Littleton/Bromfield has now scored at least five goals in every game of this year’s state tournament, an extraordinary feat.
At the heart of this run is a story of leadership that may be unprecedented in Bromfield history. Senior co-captains Jacob Dangel, Liam Glew, and Conor Glew are standing on the precipice of something truly rare: Just months ago, these three led the Bromfield School boys soccer team to an MIAA State Championship, Dangel earning the shutout as goalie while Liam set up Conor for the decisive goal against Rockland. This winter, together with Littleton co-captains Gavin Werling and Andrew Archer, they have guided a second program to the state final in the same academic year.
Tigers offense this season has been nearly impossible to contain. Liam and Conor Glew, along with Werling, each surpassed the 100-career-point mark this season. In the final four win, Werling and Littleton sophomore Blake Hannon led the way with two goals apiece, while Conor Glew added the clincher. Bromfield sophomore Kelly Logan, who shifted from defense to forward for the postseason, has added a tenacious new dimension to a forecheck that has kept opponents on their heels.
When Dover-Sherborn/Weston mounted a desperate third-period push in the final four game, Dangel turned away eight shots in under three minutes, finishing the game with 29 total saves. Bromfield junior Cael Piekos was a defensive stalwart, as he has been all season long, and defenseman Liam Glew produced one of the playoff’s signature moments, a critical penalty kill sequence that sprung Werling for a shorthanded goal just 1:37 into the second period.
The state championship game is scheduled for March 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Boston, with tickets available at Ticketmaster. The Garden awaits.
