Bromfield’s boys and girls tennis teams are headed to the second round of the 2026 Massachusetts Athletic Association Division 4 State Tennis Tournament. In back-to-back matches played at home Thursday afternoon and into the evening on Bromfield’s tennis courts, the girls defeated Clinton 4-1 and the boys shut out Uxbridge 5-0.
The girls clinched their victory without a second doubles team, forcing them to forfeit one of their matches to Clinton. With one of its players sidelined by an injury, Coach Chris Holmes gambled that his three singles and first doubles players would prevail. And they did.
Boys coach Scott Hoffman said the team’s victory was the “closest 5-0 match ever.” Second singles and first and second doubles went to three sets apiece. The first doubles players Donovan Smith and Otavio Medina clinched their match after two and one-half hours and second doubles was decided, under lights, by a 10-point tie breaker.
The boys will play their next match away against No. 4 seed Mt. Greylock at Williams College on June 2. The girls will play No. 12 Rising Tide Charter next week at home on a date and time to be determined. Winners will advance to the Division 4 quarterfinals
