Fire and Ambulance Log: September 3 to 9 , 2024

The Ambulance Service responded to four calls and transported four people to the hospital, none with Advanced Life Support services on board. The ambulance responded to two motor vehicle crashes. No one needed a lift assist.

Tuesday, Sept. 3
At 12:37 p.m. Shirley’s Fire Department asked for help from Harvard’s drone team in locating a brush fire near Patterson and Walker roads. At 9:46 p.m. Engine 2 was called to a crash on Interstate 495 northbound, but the call was canceled while the engine was on the way.

Wednesday, Sept. 4
At 7:21 a.m. a smoke alarm went off at a Lancaster County Road home; the duty officer found no smoke or fire. At 7:35 a.m. the duty officer was called to a house on Littleton County Road after the resident smelled smoke, but the duty officer found nothing amiss.

Thursday, Sept. 5
At 2:04 p.m. the duty officer smelled smoke near the intersection of East Bare Hill and Brown roads. He found a resident was burning some invasive plants and informed the resident that open burning is not permitted in this season.

Friday, Sept. 6
At 7:59 a.m. firefighters responded to a three-car crash on Route 2 eastbound, where they provided traffic control and safety. At 12:29 p.m. a 911 caller reported a fire alarm going off in the home of a neighbor who was away; the duty officer checked at the house but found the alarm had stopped and there was no sign of smoke or fire.

Saturday, Sept. 7
At 4:37 p.m. an Oak Hill Road resident reported smelling gas in the house. Engine 2, the tower truck, and the tanker all responded, and the crews found gas coming from the stove. They shut off the stove and ventilated the house, then made sure the stove was working properly. At 5:37 p.m. another resident smelled gas, this time at a Trail Ridge Way home; firefighters found no trace of gas there.

Sunday, Sept. 8
At 1:10 p.m. a 911 caller reported a brush fire on Depot Road near the railroad crossing. Engines 2 and 3, both forestry cars, the tanker, and the drone team responded but found no fire. At 6:45 p.m. another caller reported a brush fire near the railroad, this time on Old Mill Road. A railroad employee had seen a very small fire and reported it, but the train crew had successfully put it out; the firefighters checked the area to make sure no fire remained.

Monday, Sept. 9
At 9:43 a.m. the Oak Hill Road resident who had reported a smell of gas on Saturday called again with the same problem; firefighters checked the pilot light on the water heater and relit it.

The police and fire logs are written by a Press reporter based on dispatch logs and interviews with police and fire staff. Decisions to publish or withhold the names of people arrested will be based on our need to balance the privacy of individuals with our responsibility to report news of significance.
