Bromfield boys won both the 4x1600-meter relay and the distance medley relay at the May 1 Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Division 6 State Relay Meet at Ayer Shirley High School. Rosie Bradley delivered two standout anchor legs, helping lead Bromfield’s girls relay squad to a strong finish.

The Bromfield boys finished seventh among 24 schools with 33 points while the girls tied for eighth place among 19 schools at the annual event with 29 points. In relay meets, team scores depend as much on depth as on top performances. Bromfield boys competed in seven of 15 events, while the girls entered nine. The Ayer Shirley boys and girls teams, who won both meets, fielded entries in all 15 events.

Kai Kemeza anchored both the boys 4x1600 and the boys distance medley relay. In the DMR, he closed with a 4:32 split, including a 62-second final 400 meters. He ran alongside Harrison Binnick (1,200-meter leg), Liam Kemeza (800 meters), and Micah Wiebe (400 meters), helping knock 6 seconds off the school’s record in the event.

Bradley anchored both the girls 4x1600 relay and the girls distance medley relay, highlighted by a strong closing effort in the 4x1600 that nearly pulled Bromfield into first place. Bradley received the baton 12 seconds behind the leader and steadily reeled in the field, closing 9 seconds of the gap before running out of track. Bromfield finished second in the event.

Her effort capped a strong team performance. Returning runners Abby Wool and Christina Kekis each improved on their splits from last year’s race, while Jacqueline Wilkins, running the relay for the first time, contributed a personal best split that helped set up the finish.

“What was particularly notable about the girls’ 4x1600 was that they ran 26 seconds faster than last year’s team,” said head coach Marisa Steele. “Rosie ran an impressive anchor leg. She closed a gap of over nine seconds but ran out of real estate.”

Eighth-grader Isaac Wiebe posted the second-fastest 800-meter closing leg among 21 teams in the sprint medley relay, helping Cole Maddalone, Jonathan LeGrand, and Mathias Holzmann to a seventh-place finish.

In field relays, teams of three combine their best marks for a total score. Bromfield’s javelin relay team placed 10th with a combined score of 96.30 from Jonathan LeGrand, Ben McWaters, and Micah Wiebe. LeGrand led the group with a personal record of 130 feet, 11 inches, a mark that qualifies him for the MIAA state meet later this month. McWaters also set a personal record. LeGrand, new to the javelin this season, has improved at every meet, Steele said.

One of the meet’s quieter stories belonged to Sienna Schulz, who stepped into the girls pole vault relay at the last minute to replace an unavailable teammate. She joined Callia Sintros and Laci Ostaszewski in a tie for first place.

“Relay meets often require quick changes to lineups due to illnesses and injuries,” Steele said. “Sienna stepped up to take a teammate’s place in the pole vault, helping the squad tie for first. It is rare to have an athlete both capable and willing to do what is needed for the team. Sienna serves quietly as a wonderful role model for our athletes.”
