The girls varsity basketball team lost its first league game of the season on Friday, Dec 12, at home on the Bromfield court against the Gardner Wildcats, 47-34.

Head coach Brian McCullough referred to the loss as a “classic first game of the season.” In the first quarter, the girls played with a lot of energy and scored a couple of baskets early in the game.

By the end of the first half, the Trojans were down 27-11. The third quarter had Bromfield turning the ball over to the Wildcats again and again. But by the fourth quarter, the girls showed renewed vigor and put up more points than the other three quarters combined. Game high scorer and sophomore Audrey Burek made 18 of the Trojans’ 34 points.

“The fourth quarter was our best effort; we really came alive,” said McCullough. “The energy was back, the offense finally started to move, and I was so proud of the girls for not backing down. They kept fighting.”

McCullough said he learned a lot from the first game that he will use throughout the rest of the season. He is currently coaching both the varsity and junior varsity teams as Bromfield struggles to find someone to take on the assistant role.

The girls were scheduled to face Nipmuc, the Mendon-Upton Regional High School in Upton, on Wednesday, Dec 17. “We want to play fast this year,” said McCullough. “I want to keep the momentum building off the last quarter of the Gardner game. We had Audrey leading us in points, and I think getting her hands on the ball more, creating plays, and being aggressive will help lead us in the direction we are working towards. I can’t wait for the challenge.”
