The Special Town Caucus, convened at Town Hall on Saturday, Sept.27, to nominate two candidates for the office of selectman, ended almost as soon as it began.
Voters nominated Ken Swanton of Fairbank Street and Deborah Thompson of Poor Farm Road to fill the seat on the five-member Board of Selectmen that was vacated by Marie Sobalvarro earlier this year. After being reelected to a three year term in April, Sobalvarro resigned unexpectedly. She later applied for the newly created position of Assistant Town Administrator and Human Resources Director, the position which she now holds.
Swanton was nominated by Carlene Phillips and his nomination was seconded by Daria Swanton; Thompson was nominated by Selectwoman Lucy Wallace and seconded by Willie Wickman.
Town Clerk Janet Vellante gaveled the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Roughly 35 voters were present, most arriving in the Town Hall Meeting Room just minutes before the formalities began. By 7:15 p.m. the room was empty.
The two candidates must complete and bring their nomination papers to Town Hall by 5 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 30. Additional candidates may place their names on the ballot by gathering 29 signatures and submitting nomination papers to Vellante by that date and time. The election will be held Tuesday, Nov.4, as part of the statewide general election and ballot.
