Wicks sisters shine and Trojans build momentum early in lacrosse season

The Bromfield varsity girls lacrosse team kicked off its season with a 50/50 split that included a loss to Littleton on Friday, March 28, and a win against Groton-
Dunstable on Tuesday, April 1. Head Coach Ali Wicks said the team is young, with no graduating seniors, paving the way for at least two years of growth and victories.

The Trojans fell to Littleton 8–11 at an away game. With no preseason scrimmage opportunities, Wicks said she wasn’t sure how the players would click on the field. The first quarter was rough, both literally and figuratively, with Bromfield receiving three yellow cards in the first six minutes of the game. A yellow card is issued when a major penalty is committed, such as striking a player on the head with a stick or other illegal stick use, requiring the offender to sit out the game for two minutes.

Wicks said things began to turn around for Bromfield in the second quarter. “The athletes began to connect,” she said. “We went from a 0-4 deficit to being tied or one goal away for a large amount of the rest of the game.” Junior and co-captain Hanna Wicks and sister, freshman Kate Wicks (both daughters of the coach) were game high scorers, with three goals each. Goalie and junior Darragh O’Connor had eight saves. “We learned a lot about our team’s strengths and weaknesses in those 48 minutes and were able to carry that into our game at Groton-Dunstable,” said Wicks.

Those lessons translated to a 15–8 win against Groton-Dunstable on their opponent’s home field. Wicks said that historically, the Crusaders were challenging competitors for Bromfield. She went into the game with the mindset of controlling the draws (the beginning of each play that determines possession of the ball), moving the ball around on offense, and not wasting shots.

Bromfield dominated possession from the first draw, and led for the entire game. “In the second half, two of their players started putting in goals by getting our defense cluttered and flustered,” said Wicks. “We had to make some changes to how we were guarding those players, and we took the game back.”

Hanna Wicks was the game’s high scorer with 5 goals while O’Connor had seven saves in the net. The Trojans were scheduled to face North Middlesex Regional on Tuesday, April 8, on their home field in Townsend at 4 p.m.
