Undefeated Bromfield runners remain first in league

Harvard’s boys and girls cross-country runners remain first in the Midland-Wachusett C League after outpacing Lunenburg at an away meet Oct. 2.

The boys captured the top three spots to beat Lunenburg 19-34, while the girls won their race 18-37.

The boys were without Ben McWaters, the team’s top runner, but Harrison Binnick (17 minutes, 37 seconds), Liam Kemeza (17:51), and Christian Johannesen (18:07) captured the top three positions before a Lunenburg runner crossed the finish line.

Coach Marisa Steele said she was especially pleased with Shea Van Cleef’s fifth place performance (18:24). “He’s been our fifth man all season and has been steadily closing the gap between himself and our top runners with every meet that he races,” said Steele. “Shea started the season more than two minutes behind our top guys and is now less than one minute behind that group.”

Evelyn Wool (20:56) and Rosie Bradley (21:00) finished first and second, followed by Abby Wool (23:27), Christina Kekis (23:28), and Helen Holzmann (23:32) in fourth through sixth place.

The story of the girls meet was one of consistency, coach Matt Lynde wrote the Press. “Evelyn Wool and Rosie Bradley led the race from start to finish. Although Lunenburg was able to spot one runner between the next three Bromfield runners, Abby Wool, Kekis, and Holzmann have worked all season as a team to pace and motivate each other, Lynde said.

The team’s final league meet was scheduled to be held at home against Tyngsborough on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
