Bromfield’s distance runners shone at this year’s Division 5 Kalperis Relays, winning one event and placing third in three others. The annual event was hosted by the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Jan. 16 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, drawing runners and athletes from more than 30 Division 5 schools from across the state.

The boys 4x800-meter relay team won its event with a time of 8 minutes, 24.85 seconds, beating its time in 2024 by more than 7 seconds. Harrison Binnick ran the first leg, followed by Micah Wiebe, Kai Kemeza, and anchor Liam Kemeza. Their time of 8:24.85 was the fastest time run by Bromfield since 2012, just two seconds shy of the school record, Coach Marisa Steele told the Press.

The same foursome won third place in the 4000-meter distance medley relay with a time of 11:14.40. Binnick ran the lead 1200 leg, Wiebe ran the 400 leg, Liam Kemeza ran the 800 leg, and Kai Kemeza ran the 1600 anchor leg. Their time, according to Steele, was just two seconds short of the school record.

The Bromfields girls won two third-place finishes, first in 4x800-meter relay with a time of 10:32.63 and then in the 4000-meter distance medley relay in 13:26.75. Jacquie Wilkins, Christina Kekis, Abby Wool, and Rosie Bradley ran the 4x800. Members of the medley relay team were Abby Wool, Piper Candon, Jacquie Wilkins, and Rosie Bradley.

Overall, the Bromfield boys tied for eighth place with Hopedale and Lunenburg with 16 points. The girls tied with Medway for 12th place with 12 points. Both teams competed in six of the seven available track events, skipping the 4x50-meter hurdles. Three girls competed in the shot put event, one of three field events offered.

While younger athletes continue to gain experience in weekly Midland-Wachusett League Division D meets at Fitchburg, Bromfield’s top runners are headed this weekend to another pair of MSTCA events in Boston, first the Coaches Invitational on Jan. 24 and then the Freshman/Sophomore Championship on Jan. 25.
