Harvard Lions Club thanks community for contributing to disaster relief in North Carolina

On behalf of the Harvard Lions Club, I would like to thank members of our local community for their incredible support of our North Carolina disaster relief drive in mid-October. Our week-long drive garnered many thousands of donated items, sorted and boxed into 300-plus cartons, stacked into seven 5-foot-high pallet loads that filled over half of one of the trucks that delivered donated goods to Asheville. Our success was made possible by the hard work of 31 Harvard Lions and their spouses, the generous contribution of space in the Dunkin’ building by the Catalano Companies, the support of local businesses including the generous cash contribution by Sorrentos, and most importantly, the generosity of our local community. Together we made a difference in the lives of fellow Americans who are less fortunate.

And we were not alone in the effort. Forty-five Lions clubs and many hundreds of members in Massachusetts participated, as well as clubs in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. Altogether, 56 pallets of donated items were loaded onto 26’ trucks offered at generous discount by Enterprise Truck Rental, plus a 52’ tractor trailer donated by A. Duie Pyle. These trucks were driven directly to Asheville by local Lions, where North Carolina Lions were waiting to unload and distribute the items where most needed.

Additionally, over $41,000 was received in cash donations, and used to purchase sleeping bags, propane heaters, portable generators, and gas cans, that were added to the donated goods for delivery.

While our local drive has wrapped up, you can still make contributions to the continuing Lions disaster relief effort through the Lions Club International Fund, https://www.lionsclubs.org/en/donate.
