The boys and girls soccer teams advanced to the quarterfinals of this year’s Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 5 soccer playoffs after winning their round of 16 matches in back-to-back games last week.
The No. 3 seed boys (13-3-4) shut out the No. 19 seed Worcester Main South, 8-0, on Friday, Nov. 8, while the girls (6-11-2) beat No. 8 seed Hopedale, 2-1, in an exciting nighttime match played at Milford High School.
Now the competition gets tougher. As this edition of the Press was being assembled, the boys were preparing for their next match, this one against the high-scoring No. 11 seed Pioneer Charter School of Science Panthers (14-5-0) at Ayer’s turf field Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 13. The girls were scheduled to play the No. 1 seed Douglas Tigers (14-5-1) away at Grafton the evening of Nov. 14.
Meanwhile, boys and girls cross-country teams both qualified, as expected, for the MIAA Division 3 state finals scheduled to be held at Devens starting at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Trojan girls placed first in last week’s MIAA Division 3C sectionals last weekend, while the boys placed second.
Boys cross-country (season 5-0)
- 11/9 MIAA Division 2 Wave C state qualifier. Boys placed second with 82 points among 21 competing schools. Top Bromfield runner was Ben McWaters who placed third with a time of 16 minutes, 58.63 seconds.
Girls cross-country (5-0)
- 11/9 MIAA Division 2 Wave C state qualifier. Girls won the race with a score of 87 points among the 19 competing teams. Evelyn Wool placed third (18:27.21) followed by Rosie Bradley in fourth (18:42.50).
Boys soccer (13-3-4)
- 11/8 MIAA Division 5 state tournament, round of 16 vs. Worcester Main South (19). 8-0 win. See story on page 13.
- 11/13 MIAA D5 state tournament quarterfinals vs. Pioneer Charter School of Science (11), 4-1 win.
Girls soccer (7-11-2)
- 11/8 MIAA Division 5 state tournament, round of 16 @Hopedale (8), 2-1 win.
- 11/14 MIAA D5 state tournament quarterfinals @Douglas (1) (at Grafton), 5:30 p.m.
