Slow start, late push: Trojans fall twice at Rocket Tip-Off

The boys varsity basketball team suffered two losses at the Rocket Tip-Off Tournament held at Anna Maria College in Paxton last weekend. On Friday night, Dec 12, the Trojans battled the Blackstone-Millville Regional Chargers and lost 52-39. The next day, Bromfield went up against the Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School from Charlton and, once again, lost 52-39.

The game on Friday night had a slow start for the Trojans. By the end of the first half, they were down by 22 points, trailing the Chargers 34-12. They scored 9 points in the third quarter but really went after the win in the fourth, playing aggressively and managing to come within 5 points of Blackstone-Millville with three minutes, nine seconds left on the clock. Game play came to a halt after a collision on the court that resulted in two head injuries and the need for blood to be cleaned from the floor.

“Our strategy going into Friday’s game was to bring suffocating defensive pressure to force turnovers by BMR,” said head coach for Bromfield, Anne McWaters, in an interview with the Press. “Our full-court trap didn’t work to get us the steals I had hoped for. Unfortunately, I think the jitters of the first game just got to everyone and our first half was rough. We came together more in the second half, but we weren’t playing well as a team in that game—too many guys trying to do it themselves and not playing together.”

On Saturday, the Trojans kept the game tighter throughout. By the end of the first half, Bromfield trailed Bay Path by only 3 points at 27-24. The third quarter had the two teams trading fouls, with Bromfield entering bonus with minutes still left on the clock. When a team reaches five fouls in a quarter, they enter bonus, meaning that for every additional foul committed, shooting or otherwise, the other team gets to attempt free throws.

The final quarter saw Bromfield lose all its momentum. The Trojans were down by 4 at the start but managed to score only 8 points, while Bay Path earned another 17.

“I thought we started pretty well, and I was pleased with the first half,” said McWaters. “The second half was a different story. We turned the ball over way too much—too much dribbling and not enough passing. It’s a work in progress. We’ll get there.”

The Trojans were set to face the Trivium School in Lancaster on Wednesday, Dec 17.
