Bromfield runners compete with the best at Ocean State XC Invitational

The girls and boys cross-country teams traveled to Warwick, Rhode Island, last Saturday, Sept. 28, to compete against runners from across New England in the annual Ocean State XC Invitational, considered one of the region’s most prestigious invitational meets, drawing as many as 1,000 runners from 14 states.

Evelyn Wool and Rosie Bradley qualified for the girls 5K championship race, Wool (19 minutes, 25.0 seconds) placing 17th and Bradley (19:44.7) 19th in a field of 92 runners. Both had season-best times, coach Matt Lynde told the Press.

Abby Wool, Christina Kekis, Helen Holzmann, and Gabriella Temps, who ran in the Division 2 varsity girls race, all had season-best times as well. Racing in a field of 252 runners, Wool (22:24.0) placed 56th, and Kekis (22:38.9) was 63rd. In the 5K D2 junior varsity race, newcomer Anouk Bidault (33:48.6) earned herself a personal best, and senior Ally Becker (26:59.6) took home a medal with a 25th-place finish.

In the 2400 meter Division 2 freshman girls race, first-year runner Kylie Nguyen (18:38.0) led her cohort with a 22nd-place finish, which also earned her a medal.

The boys varsity team finished eighth out of 45 teams in the boys 5K Division 2 race. The most notable performances of the day were by Kai Kemeza and Micah Wiebe in the 4K D2 freshman race, coach Marisa Steele wrote the Press. Kemeza (14:30.0) placed eighth out of 125 boys in his race while Wiebe (15:10.6) placed 19th. “Both boys are progressing nicely and will be able to help with the depth that we need to do well in the championship meets this November,” said Steele.

Both teams are first in the six-school Midland-Wachusett C League.
