Balanced attack, fast finish: Bromfield notches two big wins ahead of Gardner rematch

The Bromfield boys varsity basketball team kept a hold on its fourth place ranking in the Midland-Wachusett D League after wins against South Lancaster Academy on Thursday, Jan. 15, 57-43, and West Boylston on Friday, Jan. 16, 58-35.

Bromfield’s game at South Lancaster Academy on Thursday got off to a slow start, with the Trojans struggling to find their footing. It took more than three minutes for Bromfield to get on the scoreboard, but then junior Noah Petrossi broke the ice with a 3-pointer. Unfortunately for the Trojans, South Lancaster dictated the pace early, capitalizing on missed Bromfield shots and sloppy ball handling. Bromfield ended the first quarter down 15-8.

“We didn’t have any energy at the beginning of the game,” said Bromfield Coach Anne McWaters. “Things just felt off,” she said in a postgame interview.

In the second quarter, Bromfield began clawing back. Petrossi hit another three, and sophomore Isaac Balicky converted a tough layup through contact after drawing a foul. Sophomore Julian Kosciak also helped close the gap after rebounding a missed 3-pointer, getting fouled on the putback attempt, and landing his shots at the free-throw line.

Defensively, the Trojans tightened up significantly, forcing clock violations and disrupting South Lancaster’s possessions. Bromfield trimmed what had been a double-digit deficit to just three points by halftime, trailing 24-21.

The third quarter had the physical play intensifying, resulting in sloppy fouls, arguments with officials, and bonus situations for both teams. The Trojans trailed by six heading into the fourth.

A 3-pointer from Kosciak to open the quarter sparked a comeback, and while South Lancaster answered with a quick layup and a 3-pointer, Bromfield matched the intensity possession by possession. Quick defensive stops and fast ball movement allowed Bromfield to finally surge ahead, taking the lead and then widening it with a series of strong layups.

“[Senior] Josh Pelak came to play in that one, and his energy was palpable,” said McWaters in an email to the Press. Bromfield finished the night with a dominant 22-2 run in the fourth quarter to seal a 57-43 win. Pelak was high scorer with 17 points. “Thankfully we got the W,” said McWaters. “It certainly wasn’t pretty though. We won’t have the luxury of getting that far behind and still coming back on other teams.”

Another away game on Friday night, Jan. 16, against West Boylston had Bromfield delivering a steadier, more complete performance. Pelak scored first for the Trojans about a minute and a half in, and after West Boylston answered with a layup, Bromfield began to create separation.

The Trojans missed several early 3-point attempts, but Petrossi buried a late one to widen the gap, and Bromfield closed the first quarter ahead 14-5. The second quarter was relatively quiet, but a highlight came when Balicky made a strong steal with about three minutes left, leading to an easy layup. Bromfield entered halftime up 30-18.

Petrossi scored immediately to start the second half, and though West Boylston responded with a 3-pointer of its own, Bromfield remained composed. By late in the third quarter the Trojans led 39-25, and they stretched the lead to 49-29 by the end of the period before cruising to the 58-35 final.

“It was a good team win with everyone contributing,” said McWaters. “We’re best when our offense is spread around. When you have multiple offensive threats, you’re so much harder to defend.”

With three games in one week, the Trojans earned their break over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Bromfield is scheduled to face Gardner at a home game Friday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m.
