Bromfield swimmers and divers make a splash at MIAA sectionals

Led by sophomore Eliana Laham and junior Bowen Clarke, eight Bromfield swimmers and divers earned a spot on the podium at this year’s Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Central/West Division Championship, held Sunday, Feb. 8, at Springfield College.

The girls team competed in eight of 12 events and medaled in five. Laham placed third in both the 100-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle. Junior Brianna LoPresti was fifth in the 1-meter diving event, while senior Charlotte Miling and sophomore Reety Sharma each grabbed eighth place in their individual events. In MIAA swimming competitions, medals are awarded to the top eight finishers in any event.

In the boys competition, five Bromfield swimmers, including members of both the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, competed in six of 12 events and medaled in three. Bowen Clarke was second in the 50-yard and third in the 500-yard freestyle races. The 200-yard freestyle relay team finished seventh.

Team standings at MIAA championships are determined by individual performances but also by the number of a team’s athletes who have qualified. Points are awarded to the top 16 finishers: 20 points to the winner (40 if it’s a relay) and one point to the 16th finisher.

The Bromfield girls finished ninth among 27 participating schools with 101 points. Minnechaug Regional won the meet with 272 points. The Bromfield boys placed 13th with 67 points. Minnechaug Regional was first with 293.

At midweek, Bromfield’s swimmers were preparing for their next and final challenge: The MIAA Division 2 State Championship, which brings together top competitors from smaller programs throughout the state. This year’s event will be held at MIT’s Zesiger Center, with events set to begin Saturday, Feb. 14, at 3:45 p.m.
