The path to ending segregation in baseball

The Warner Free Lecture series will present an evening of baseball history with WCVB reporter and author Ted Reinstein Friday, Feb. 13, 7 p.m., at the library’s Volunteers Hall, 4 Pond Road. Reinstein will illuminate little-known heroes who fought segregation in the sport, from communist newspaper reporters to Pullman car porters who spread Black newspapers espousing integration in professional sports. Parents’ night out

The Harvard Unitarian Universalist Church will host “Parents’ Night Out/Children’s Night In” Friday, Feb. 13, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Fellowship Building, 7 Elm St. Children ages 4 to 12 are welcome for an evening of crafts and games, light snacks, and a movie for those preferring a quieter evening. Please be sure children have eaten dinner before arriving. Fee $20 for the first child, $10 for each additional sibling, maximum $40 per family. Register with Liv at dre@uuharvard.org. Open house at historical society

The Harvard Historical Society will host an open house Sunday, Feb. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the meetinghouse, 215 Still River Rd. Special items from the collections will be on display, including an array of Valentines from the Victorian period. Board members will be on hand to give information and answer questions. Another open house will be held March 15.

New moon hike

Join the Harvard Conservation Trust on a guided hike under the new moon Friday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. Come with friends and family, and gather around a firepit to warm up and enjoy hot beverages and s’mores. Bring walking sticks or poles, a headlight or flashlight, and traction cleats for snow and ice. Keelaghan and Woodhead to perform at Volunteers Hall

Harvard Friends of the Arts will present James Keelaghan and David Woodhead in concert Friday, Feb. 20, 7:30 p.m., in Volunteers Hall at the library at 4 Pond Road. Keelaghan is one of Canada’s most respected folk musicians, a winner of multiple Juno Awards, and brings warmth, wit, and emotional depth to every performance. ‘Enslavement in the Puritan Village’

Local historian Jane Sciacca will give a talk on the history of enslavement in the colonial north Saturday, Feb. 21, 2 to 3 p.m., at Fruitlands Museum, 102 Prospect Hill Road. Using church records, bills of sale, and military documents, Sciacca’s research sheds light on the pervasive impact of slavery in colonial towns such as Sudbury, Concord, and Framingham. Puppet theater at Devens

Drawbridge Puppet Theater will perform “The Princess and the Pea” and “The Fisherman and his Wife” Saturday, Feb. 21, 6 to 7 p.m., at Dragonfly Wellness Center, 176 Jackson Road, Devens. With original scripts and songs, Drawbridge Theater has provided quality family entertainment with humor and music for 35 years. $7 per person, free for ages 2 and under. Learn about the Healing Garden

The Garden Club of Harvard will hold a joint meeting with the Harvard Woman’s Club Monday, Feb. 23, 9:30 a.m., at the Harvard Senior Center, 16 Lancaster County Road, for a presentation on the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden. This is an opportunity to learn about this important cancer resource here in our own community, from its inception to its current offerings, with time for questions.


HES game night

On Thursday, Feb. 26, 5 to 7 p.m., the Harvard Schools PTO invites all Hildreth Elementary School students and their families to an evening of fun and games in the HES cafeteria. Grab your favorite game and challenge your friends or one of the HES principals. Pizza and baked goods will be for sale. All proceeds benefit the PTO.


Staff-senior volleyball game

The Harvard Educators Association will hold its 56th annual staff-senior competition with a volleyball game Friday, Feb. 27, 7 p.m., in the Bromfield School gym. Patron tickets $30, pay by Friday, Feb. 13, and receive acknowledgement in the program book. General admission $10 for adults and $5 for students. Ice skating at Devens

Ice skating is now open to the public, daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., on a temporary outdoor rink at 100 Sherman Ave., Devens. Parking is available in the lot at the community center. HES chorus sings for Worcester Railers

The Hildreth Elementary School chorus will sing on the ice to open the Worcester Railers game Friday, Feb. 13, 7:05 p.m. at the DCU Center, 50 Foster St., Worcester. Semiaquatic mammals of the Nashua River

On Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 10 a.m., Nashua River Watershed Association educator and naturalist Gaynor Bigelbach will discuss semiaquatic mammals at the Nashua Senior Center, 70 Temple St., Nashua, New Hampshire. Bigelbach will cover the physical adaptations, behaviors, and diet of otters, muskrats, beavers, and mink living within the Nashua and Merrimack River watersheds and how the presence of these animals is an important indicator of river health.
