As a tiny five-year-old jumping into a world of story times, finger painting, and valentine-making where I knew nobody, I was a little intimidated. But the moment I walked into that classroom filled with bright colors and one beautiful woman radiating with kindness, I knew I had nothing to be afraid of. Mrs. Gould never ceased to amaze me, even years after my days in her little kindergarten class. Whether I was a fifth-grader roaming the hallways as one of the oldest kids in the school, or waiting for HES to get out so the team could start middle school basketball practice, Mrs. Gould was always standing there with open arms and that unforgettable smile that would melt your heart right into hers.
I always wondered how she remembered me after so many years after I had moved on from her class, what with hundreds of new kindergarteners taking my place every year. But that was her magic; once she met you, you were never forgotten and you stayed in her heart forever. I knew what was coming whenever we saw each other: her arms open wide, a huge smile on her face, and the warmest “Hi!” you could ever imagine. I’ll never forget her extraordinary personality and the warmth you could feel when she walked into the room. Her smile is forever inscribed in my heart, and her spirit will always be with me. And whenever the sun shines extra brightly, I know it is Mrs. Gould’s radiant smile beaming down on us from heaven.
