Bromfield’s small but competitive boys and girls track and field teams ran, jumped, and vaulted to top spots in last week’s Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 6 track and field championships.

Seniors Christopher Demetros for the boys and Grace Beckett for the girls leapt to first place in the pole vault event to top the teams’ individual performances.
The boys finished fourth overall with 33 points, having entered nine athletes in eight events. Amesbury and Littleon tied for first place with 69 points among the 49 participating schools. Seniors Jack Stahl and Colin Harte were among the top 10 in each of their events.
The Bromfield girls finished 13th with 20.5 points among the 41 participating schools. It was an impressive showing by the eight athletes who competed in only seven of the championship’s 18 events. Mount Greylock Regional won the championship with 97 points. All but the 4×800 relay team finished among the top 10 in at least one of their events, including freshman Satriah Sikochi, who finished 10th in the pentathlon. A pentathlon requires an athlete to excel in five events: 100-meter hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, and 800-meter run.
The state championship brings the outdoor track and field season to a close. Still to come are the MIAA Meet of Champions at Fitchburg State University on May 30 and June 1, featuring the top athletes from all six divisions. That meet is followed by the 77th Annual New England Outdoor Track and Field Championship at the University of New Hampshire on June 28. Demetros and Beckett will compete in the pole vault event at the Meet of Champions. Harte has qualified for the 100-meter dash.
