The Bromfield varsity lacrosse team crushed Hudson High School in its last game of the regular season on Thursday, May 23. The 23-9 win raises the Trojans’ record to 4-14, qualifying the team for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 4 state championship, ranked 25th out of 32 teams.
The highest scorers were Bromfield’s senior co-captain Kristen Podgorni with seven goals and one assist, senior co-captain Cavanna Aldrich with six goals, and sophomore Hanna Wicks with five goals and four assists.
Hudson’s 4-12 record made the Trojans conservatively hopeful coming into the game, though they kept their guard up, aware that scores and records are not always accurate representations of ability.
The Trojans themselves struggled earlier in the season with a slew of difficult away games that challenged the young team and brought down their record. By this point in the season, however, the Trojans are more confident and prepared.
“I feel like one day it just clicked and our improvement as a team shot up 100 levels,” said co-captain Cavanna Aldrich. “We have come really far this season both in skill and working together, and I am so proud of each player on our team.”
Bromfield demonstrated this improvement against Hudson as they kept possession of the ball. They won 24 draw controls—seven by Podgorni and six by co-captain Savannah Kulieses. “When we win the draw, slow down, and make plays happen, we are solid,” said Bromfield coach Ali Wicks. “That was what we did!”
Although Bromfield’s point total against Hudson was proof of their stronger offense, the Trojans have room to improve defensively. Wicks likened the situation to their game against Hopedale, in which their defending was not ideal. “It was almost like we were surprised to have Hudson’s offense on our defensive end,” said Wicks. “We need to play our best defense every game, no matter what the score or who the opponent is.”
Looking ahead, Bromfield will likely play Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School (10-6) in the first round of the state tournament, though dates and brackets had not been announced at press time.
