What started out as a call about a single-car accident Saturday turned into an altercation that left the driver under arrest, facing multiple charges, and on his way to the hospital with minor injuries.
On Saturday, Feb. 20, a black Jeep traveling north on Bolton Road crashed head-on into a utility pole at the intersection with Massachusetts Avenue. A passing motorist, who stopped to assist, saw the driver get out of the vehicle, survey the damage, immediately return to his car and drive off. The witness called police and proceeded to follow the Jeep, which pulled into the General Store parking lot. The witness stood by until police arrived.
When they arrived, officers saw the heavy front-end damage on the Jeep and spoke to the driver, 53-year-old Brian Francis Lee of Bedford. They subsequently asked him to step out of the vehicle and take a sobriety test. When he failed, an officer advised him that he was under arrest for operating under the influence of liquor.
When Lee tried to resist arrest, a scuffle took place, according to police, who said it took two officers to place him in custody. Neither officer was injured, but Lee suffered minor injuries during the incident and was taken by ambulance to Nashoba Valley Medical Center with a police escort. Police said Lee was treated at the hospital and released back into their custody.
Police took Lee to the police station, where he was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, second offense; resisting arrest; negligent operation of a motor vehicle; failure to stay within marked lanes; property damage; and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. He was held at the station on $540 bail, and when the bail was posted, Lee was released pending his arraignment in Clinton District Court on Feb. 22.
