Funkhouser Trio at Center on the Common
Center on the Common will present the John Funkhouser Trio Friday, March 7, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. The trio blends modern jazz, funk, blues, 20th century classical, Indian classical, and European and American folk music to create a funky, groove-oriented sound. Stage Festival
The Bromfield Drama Society will present “3x3x3 Stage Festival” Friday, March 7, and Saturday, March 8, at 7 p.m. at the Bromfield School. Three 30-minute shows will be performed simultaneously, three times over, in three different locations at the school: the Cronin Auditorium, the cafeteria, and Room 355. The audience will be split into groups and rotate from venue to venue. Tickets are available at the door.
WinterFest Weekend
Fruitlands Museum will host a WinterFest Weekend Saturday, March 8, and Sunday, March 9, at noon. Bring sleds, snowshoes, and cross-country skis.
Family Movie Night
The Harvard Public Library will host a PG-rated movie suitable for all ages Friday, March 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the library. The animated movie tells the story of a young inventor who must somehow stop an uncontrolled food-making machine. Popcorn and water will be served. Register at 978-456-2381.
Native American Herb Workshop
Fruitlands Museum and the Herbal Community of Central Massachusetts will host “Native American Herbs in the Modern Landscape” Saturday, March 8, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the museum. Chris Marano, clinical herbalist, will explain how to identify herbs and plants in New England and describe their natural healing properties. Contemporary and Traditional Folk Music
Harvard Friends of the Arts will present singer-songwriter Gail Finnie Rundlett in concert at the Harvard Public Library Saturday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. Rundlett will offer a program of contemporary and traditional folk music, accompanying herself on Appalachian dulcimer and guitar. Hoedown
The Harvard Girl Scouts invite members of the community to grab their cowboy hats and boots and join the Scouts in an old-fashioned hoedown Saturday, March 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Hildreth Elementary School cafeteria. Flute Music Concert
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden will present Harmonie Transverse Sunday, March 9, at 3 p.m. at the garden, 145 Bolton Road. This flute choir of 20 flutists will play classical, folk, and original music on piccolo, C flute, G alto flute, bass flute, and contra bass flute. Ticket sales will benefit the Healing Garden, which offers support, educational, and therapeutic services to those affected by cancer. Admission is $10 for Healing Garden members, $15 for nonmembers. Pete Seeger Songfest
The community is invited to join Jim Scott—composer, guitarist, and friend of Pete Seeger—in a remembrance of Seeger Saturday, March 15, at 4 p.m. at the Harvard Unitarian Church. Participants will sing many of Seeger’s well-loved songs including “If I Had a Hammer,” “Turn, Turn, Turn,” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” and hear quotes from and stories about Seeger. All are welcome, and no singing experience is necessary. The suggested donation is $10.
Celtic Music with Robbie O’Connell
Celtic musician Robbie O’Connell will offer a solo performance of Irish, folk, Scottish, and original music Saturday, March 15, at 8 p.m. at Center on the Common. O’Connell has been a member of the Clancy Brothers band, and in addition to performing solo, also performs with The Clancy Legacy and Green Fields of America. Life of Jack Kerouac
The Warner Free Lecture Series will present “The Life and Intrigues of Jack Kerouac” Friday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the library’s Volunteers Hall. Jim Sampas, well-known filmmaker and producer, will discuss the music and writing of Kerouac, who was one of the best-known writers of the Beat Generation in the 1950s. The event is free and open to the public.
Brain Fitness Workshop
The Council on Aging and Friends of the Council on Aging continue the Life Transitions series with a brain fitness workshop Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m. in the library’s Volunteers Hall. The program will begin with a brief introduction on the importance of keeping one’s brain active, healthy, and efficient as one ages. Research shows that it is possible, through deliberate choices and the practice of certain techniques and activities, to continue to stimulate brain growth throughout one’s lifetime. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to experience 12 activities targeted to brain fitness.
