Jibrayil Naoum Yusuf, Ph.D, 65, of Harvard and formerly of Amherst and Worcester, passed away Jan. 4, 2014, after a period of declining health.
Dr. Yusuf is survived by his two children, Larry Yusuf of Allston and Krystal Yusuf of Worcester; his former wife, Najah (Kanou) Yusuf; two brothers, George Youssef of Dudley and Joseph Chalino of Worcester; a sister, Georgette Abdelmasih Nasri of Sweden; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. A brother, Malki Yousef, passed away in May of 2012.
Dr. Yusuf was born in Hassake, Syria, a son of the late Naoum and Jamileh (Goulo) Chalino. He lived in Lebanon, graduated from American University in Lebanon, and earned his doctorate from the University of Bonn in Germany before immigrating to Amherst in 1978 and living for the past 27 years in Harvard.
Dr. Yusuf settled in Harvard and worked as a financial adviser with the John Hancock Company for the past 21 years. He was a dedicated and active member of St. Mary’s Syriac Orthodox Church in Shrewsbury and St. Matthew’s Syriac Orthodox Church in West Roxbury, where he also served on the church committee.
Services for Dr. Yusuf were held on Jan. 8 at St. George Orthodox Cathedral, Worcester. Burial followed in Hope Cemetery.
