Mechanical engineer, world traveler, former Harvard resident

Mario Paul Ciara, 82, of North Falmouth and formerly of Harvard died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at Falmouth Hospital. Born March 27, 1931, in Gaeta, Italy, Mario emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 4. He was raised in Somerville, graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy as a mechanical engineer, and served as a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy.
In 1960, Mario married Paula Tippett in Baltimore, Md. They raised their daughters in Hamilton and later Harvard. For more than 35 years, Mario worked for General Electric Company, where his career in the Steam Turbine Division took him all over the world, including Russia during the Cold War, Borneo, Algeria, Japan, and numerous trips throughout Europe. Mario and Paula retired to North Falmouth, where he was active with GE’s Elfun Group and Military Officers Association of America.
After Paula died in 2004, Mario married Elaine Collins in August, 2009. Mario is survived by his wife, Elaine Collins Ciara; two daughters, Susan Hathaway and Ann Olsen; and his sister, Gina Macone.
A funeral mass was held at Saint Elizabeth Seton Church in North Falmouth Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 10 a.m. Donations can be made to 54 RLF, c/o Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 101 Academy Drive, Buzzards Bay, MA 02532.
