Kelly Fitzsimmons, Artist of the Month
For Art’s Sake will feature the fine-art photography of newborns by Kelly Fitzsimmons, its December Artist of the Month, at the For Art’s Sake website and in the live gallery upstairs at the General Store. Scrabble Club
The Harvard Public Library will host a Scrabble Club for all skill levels and all ages Saturday, Dec. 18, at 1:30 p.m. at the library. Games can be played one-on-one, in teams, or four players to a board, using official Scrabble rules. Preregister by signing up in the Children’s Room.
A Christmas Carol Radio Theatre
The Harvard Friends of the Arts will perform the Orson Welles 1938 Campbell’s Radio Theatre version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol Saturday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. in Volunteers Hall at the public library. Originally broadcast on Christmas Day, 1934, Welles’ radio version of the play became an annual Christmas broadcast tradition through 1953. Admission is free. Community Messiah Sing
The town’s 46th annual Messiah Sing will take place Sunday, Dec. 19, at 5 p.m. at the Harvard Unitarian Universalist (UU) Church. The longstanding tradition, now an Anne Marie Arnold Memorial event, offers the community an opportunity to sing Handel’s Messiah with professional soloists and a chamber orchestra. Both singers and listeners are welcome. Singers can bring their own score or purchase one at the door for $10. The event is supported by the Harvard UU Church and donations to Friends of the Community Messiah Sing. Suggested donation is $10. Light refreshments follow. Christmas Bird Count
The 111th annual Christmas Bird Count, organized by the Audubon Society, will be held Sunday, Dec. 19. Participants will count the number of each species of bird that they see or hear in an assigned area in town. Experience is helpful, but expertise is not required. HCT New Year’s Day Walk
The Harvard Conservation Trust invites everyone to join neighbors from Harvard, Bolton, and Littleton to step into 2011 with the Annual New Year’s Day Walk Saturday, Jan. 1, at noon at the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge. The Wind Journeys in Groton
The Screening Room in the historic Grange Hall presents the Groton premiere of The Wind Journeys for one showing only, Saturday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. In the wake of his wife’s death, Ignacio leaves his small town and journeys to Colombia’s remote northern region to return his devil-cursed accordion to the teacher who gave it to him. A spirited teenager, Ferman, determined to become his apprentice, follows along. Ignacio tries to discourage Ferman from following in his footsteps, but destiny has different plans for them.
