Recital in Volunteers Hall
Tyler Alderson (voice) and Justin Bartlett (piano) will be performing in a recital at Volunteers Hall Thursday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m. Both performers are alumni of the Bromfield School, pursuing degrees in their respective disciplines. The program will include works by Schumann, Mozart, and Vaughan Williams. Admission is free.
HCT New Year’s Day Walk
The Harvard Conservation Trust will sponsor its annual New Year’s Day Walk Saturday, Jan. 1, at noon at the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge. Rona Balco of Friends of the Oxbow will guide the walk, which will begin at the refuge parking area at the bottom of Still River Depot Road. Hot cocoa and cookies will be served. Woman’s Club Meeting
The Harvard Woman’s Club lunch meeting Monday, Jan. 3, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Theresa’s parish hall will feature Tom McIntyre, treasurer of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, who will speak on the history of the Waltham Watch Company and the generations of women who worked there. McIntyre, whose talk will start after lunch at 12:15 p.m., will be available to answer questions about watches or give value estimates. The Bromfield scholarship recipients will also be featured guests. The meeting is open to all and members are encouraged to bring a guest. Harvard Story Slam
Warner Free Lecture Series will host a Harvard Story Slam for listeners and storytellers Friday, Jan. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at Friendly Crossways Retreat Center, 247 Littleton County Road. Anyone age 17 and older is invited to bring an original story and vie for one of six spots as a featured storyteller.
Emcee and local actor Brian Schimpf will begin the evening with a short story of his own, and then select both participants and storytelling judges at random from the audience. Participants may not use props, costumes, or musical instruments, nor may they recite poetry. Each story must be told within a five-minute time limit and may contain adult themes and language—but nothing obscene. Everyone is encouraged to practice material beforehand (a good story has a beginning, middle, and end), and may find inspiration by visiting www.themoth.org, the website of The Moth Story Hour in New York. Indian Hills Piano Recital
