Summer Hours at the Library
The Harvard Public Library will open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays during June, July, and August. Scheduled hours of operation on all other days will remain unchanged. The library will be closed Saturday, July 3, and Monday, July 5, for the Independence Day holiday.
Artists of the Month
Sue Barber’s Bauernmalerie and Schiesscheiben German folk art painted works are featured this month in the For Art’s Sake Live Gallery at the General Store. This month’s For Art’s Sake’s website features the work of studio furniture maker Peter Shepard along with a video describing his process. Concerts at Fruitlands
Conductor James O’Dell will lead the Concord Band in a lineup of Sundown Concerts at Fruitlands Museum every Wednesday evening at 7:15 p.m. All concerts have a Thursday rain date. Museum grounds will open for picnicking at 5:30 p.m. The silver anniversary concert June 30 is free; admission for the other concerts is free for members and $10 per carload for nonmembers. Orchard Solar Array Tours
Carlson Orchards will offer free public tours of its in-progress solar array installation Friday, June 25, at noon, and Friday, July 2, at 5 p.m. The tours, lasting about an hour, will start from the Carlson retail store at 115 Oak Hill Road and will show the arrays in various stages of installation.
Flea Circus
The Harvard Public Library will host Ed Popielarczyk and his Flea Circus Wednesday, June 30, from 3 to 4 p.m. The Flea Circus will feature an entire big-top circus in miniature: Fifi, who performs on the high wire and the trapeze; Bruno, the world’s strongest flea; and Fernando, who does the high dive into a pool of water, gets shot out of a cannon and into a volunteer’s hands. Family Movie Night
The Harvard Public Library will host a family movie night Thursday, July 1, at 6:30 p.m.. The movie is rated PG. Popcorn and water will be served. Seats are limited; Harvard residents can preregister by calling the Children’s Room at 978-456-2381.
Republican Town Committee
The Harvard Republican Town Committee will meet Thursday, July 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the old library. The meeting is open to all.
Harvard Fourth of July Activities!
Harvard’s annual Fourth of July fireworks and concert will take place Friday, July 2, at Fruitlands Museum. (The rain date will be Monday, July 5.) The concert will begin at 5 p.m. and the fireworks at 9 p.m. The annual 5-mile road race will start off the rest of the town festivities Saturday, July 3, at 8:15 a.m. at the Bromfield School. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at the Common, with field events to follow at the Bromfield School fields.
Allard Family Concert
Peter and Ellen Allard will present a family concert for children ages 2 to 8 Wednesday, July 7, from 3 to 3:45 p.m. at the Harvard Public Library. The Allards have released seven recordings and three song books, and have won many awards, including two Parents’ Choice, a Parent’s Guide, and six Children’s Music Web Awards. Peter Dreyer at Dunia Gallery
The Gallery at Dunia will present Spatial Rhythms, an exhibit of photographs and photograms by Peter Dreyer, June 14 through Aug. 21. An artist reception will be held Sunday, June 20, from 2 to 5 p.m. Dreyer, a visual artist based in Westwood, creates black-and-white compositions that show geometric patterns in still-life fragments that appear different when viewed up close or from a distance. Dunia is located at 43 Nason St. in downtown Maynard and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m..
Tattoos and Shortcake
Caleb Butler Lodge and the Ayer Masonic Association will hold their annual fundraiser Saturday, July 3, at the Ayer Fourth of July celebration at Perone Park in Ayer. Along with strawberry shortcake and lunch items, the concession will feature temporary tattoos by Mr. Josh.
Minute Man Air Field Open House
Minute Man Air Field will hold an open house Saturday, July 10, (rain date July 11) at the air field at 302 Boxborough Road in Stow to celebrate its 41st anniversary. The celebration will begin with a hot-air balloon launch at 6 a.m., followed by festivities beginning at 9 a.m. Among the planned activities will be free airplane rides for children ages 8 to 17, a ribbon-cutting with free cake and ice cream at 1 p.m., radio-controlled flight demonstrations, scenic air rides, and aviation displays.
Basketball Camp
New England Hoops Summer Basketball will take place Monday, July 12, to Friday, July 16, from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at Atlantic Union College, 103 George Hill Road in South Lancaster. Hoops is designed to help boys and girls ages 10 to 16 develop their basketball skills. Trophies and awards will be presented at the end of camp. Arts for the Animals
The Worcester Animal Rescue League (WARL) will sponsor Arts for the Animals show and sale, Saturday, July 17, noon to 5 p.m. at WARL, 139 Holden St. in Worcester. Rain date is Saturday, July 24. The event will showcase fine artists and crafters. Funds raised from artist participation will directly support the programs and services at WARL. Admission is free. Drama Camp
Applewild Summer Camp will host two drama programs, “Stare and Share,” a program for students in grade 3 through 5, and “In the Painting” for sixth- through ninth-graders, July 26 to Aug. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 120 Prospect St. in Fitchburg. The programs will include a stage combat workshop on Aug. 3.
