Burn wisely

February 29, 2008

As we get further into the 2008 open-burning season I would like to take this opportunity to review some of the basic rules and regulations pertinent to open burning. The burning season runs from Jan. 15 to May 1, and burning is allowed, with a permit, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Residents may burn brush, sticks, twigs, forest debris, and similar materials. The burning of leaves, tires, rubbish, stumps, construction debris, and logs greater than four inches in diameter is prohibited. Someone age 18 or older must be in attendance at all times, and fires must be completely extinguished by 4 p.m.

Brochures containing more complete information, including links to the Mass. DEP regulations, are available in the Town Hall lobby and in the lobby of the Public Safety Building.

In the event your permit fire “gets away” from you, call 911 right away to get the Fire Department rolling as quickly as possible. As always, please call 978-456-1212 or 978-456-8276 to get authorization to burn for the day.
