Eighth-grade boys basketball closes with win over Groton-Dunstable

The Bromfield boys eighth-grade basketball team beat Groton-Dunstable by a score of 51–47 to finish the season eight and six last Thursday, February 15. Peter Taylor, Sean Thurston, and Nick Ashe all finished in double figures.

In the first half of the home game, Taylor built the Trojans’ lead to seven points on two possessions. First, he stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for a layup. On the next trip down the court, he hit his first three-pointer of the game. Thurston took control for the remainder of the first half, scoring an elbow jump shot, a layup in the paint, and a put-back layup. Bromfield led 23–16 at half time.

Bromfield increased its lead to 12 points on two layups by Ian Byrne and another Taylor three-pointer. Despite another pair of shots from Thurston and key defensive blocks from Ashe and Hunter Granville, Groton-Dunstable took a one-point lead with five minutes remaining.

With two minutes left in the game, Taylor hit his final three-pointer. On the next possession, Ashe took a charge under the basket. He continued to dominate with a three-point play after being fouled on a layup. Byrne sealed the victory by making two free throws with seven seconds left.

Taylor led all players with 12 points. Ashe finished with 11 and grabbed five rebounds, while Thurston scored 10 points for the Trojans. Byrne scored all of his eight points in the second half while going four for four from the free-throw line.

Jeff Yates finished the game with four points and four rebounds. Phil Stapleton, Tyler von Loesecke, and Sebastian Lipman all added two points to the Trojans total score. Andy Tabrizi and Luke Broganer each got two steals over the course of the game. Other members of the team included Derek Silver, Ryan Egan, and Brett Keating.
