Junior center Lindsey Burke scored a game-high 16 points Saturday night despite a strong defensive game by West Boylston.
In their final game of the regular season, the Bromfield girls varsity basketball team tamed the West Boylston Lions last Saturday, February 17, by a score of 36–32. With their only league loss coming at the hands of a previous game against the same team, the Trojans ended the season as Mid-Wach D League co-champions with the Lions.
At one point early in the first half, the Trojan Women were down 10–0, but the team climbed back into the game with baskets from junior Lindsey Burke, senior Lydia Maurer, and junior Catherine Johnson. The trio scored six, five, and four first-half points respectively. Bromfield went into halftime leading 19–11.
The game remained close in the second half as the Lions regained momentum. With five minutes remaining, Bromfield led by two points. Down the stretch, Maurer hit a three-point shot from the top of the key and Burke made some key free throws. When the buzzer rang, the final score was 36–32 in favor of Bromfield.
“The defense was really great: we forced them into outside shots,” Coach Tom Hill said, adding, “Lydia’s three [-point shot] and Lindsey’s two foul shots helped a lot.”
Burke led the team with 15 points, shooting nine for 14 from the free-throw line. Maurer scored 10, while Johnson finished with seven. Senior Rebecca Reusch and sophomore Kelly Thurston each added two points in the win. “Its amazing to beat West Boylston,” Reusch said, while Maurer pointed out that she hadn’t beaten West Boylston in her entire career at Bromfield.
The last game of the regular season is reserved to honor senior players, and Trojan underclassmen treated co-captains Reusch and Maurer to balloons, gifts, flowers, and streamers all over the gymnasium. “[I want to] thank my team for the best senior night possible,” Maurer said.
