A number of people spotted a moose on Bolton Road, heading toward Pond Road. One resident described it as a “huge creature…with a great big rack.”
The Harvard Community Theatre production of “My Name Is Alice” became a finalist in the national competition of the American Alliance of Community Theatres.
An editorial opined, “Overpopulation and its equally important counterpart, overconsumption, are surely the most important issues facing Planet Earth today.”
The Board of Selectmen decided to delay a citizens’ vote on the Fort Devens Reuse Plan, and to postpone public hearings on the plan, although they worried that the delay might cause the Government Land Bank [the precursor to MassDevelopment] to quit the project entirely. The Land Bank’s attorney said that even if the Land Bank went along with the delay, the Army would not be changing its schedule for closure of the base. During the discussion on the topic one selectman observed that although the Land Bank and the towns seemed close to agreeing on how the education of students living on the base would be funded, a bill to that effect had not yet been drafted.
A letter-writer wrote:
“It is ironic that, while we as a country urge Communist, ex-Communist, and Socialist countries to use the mechanism of the free market to privatize public land and businesses, we imitate their former failed methods in disposing of the land and facilities at Fort Devens.”
