COA presents Alzheimer’s programs
On Friday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Council on Aging will offer a program on Alzheimer’s disease. It will be presented at Hildreth House by Julie McMurray of the Alzheimer’s Association. The program, for family members who are caring for someone who has Alzheimer’s or a related dementia, will focus on how to get a diagnosis, how to address behavior and communication problems, and how to find resources.
Elder law attorney Carol Barton will be at Hildreth House Friday, Aug. 28, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, to present information about many of the legal and financial issues that families face when a loved one experiences memory loss.

Plans under way for fall fashion show
The Friends of the Council on Aging has announced that its second annual fashion show fundraiser will be held Thursday, Sept. 24. The group is looking for volunteers to help with this event. Anyone who is interested can contact Bonnie Sweeney at 978-772-1688.
The Friends would like to feature a cover design by a Harvard senior on the program for the show. Submissions are due by Aug. 21. For more information contact Marie at 617-513-0433.
On the road with COA
Call the Council on Aging office at 978-456-4120 for more information or to sign up for trips. Anyone who cannot afford a trip should contact the office about a scholarship.
Thursday, Aug. 27: The COA has organized a trip to Gloucester for a whale watch. The group will leave Hildreth House at 8:30 a.m. and will stop for a quick lunch before setting sail at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $45 in advance, plus lunch.
Wednesday, Sept. 16: The COA is planning a trip to the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton. More than 20 new icons will be on exhibit, including the most significant purchase of Byzantine art by an American museum. After the tour the group will stop for lunch at Old Timer Restaurant in Clinton. The group will leave Hildreth House at 9 a.m. Cost is $5 plus lunch.
Tuesday, Sept. 22: COA travelers will head for Vermont, where they will board the Green Mountain Flyer for an historic train ride from Bellows Falls to Chester Depot, enjoying the scenery from the comfort of a restored 1913 Rutland Railcar. After lunch at the Heritage Deli and Bakery in Chester, the group will head down Route 103, with a brief stop at the Vermont Country Store to stock up on maple syrup, cheese, and souvenirs. The group will leave Hildreth House at 8:15 a.m. and return around 5 p.m. Cost is $30 plus lunch.
