Bromfield rowers meet C.R.A.S.H.-B challenge

March 16, 2007

Seven members of the Bromfield rowing team participated in the C.R.A.S.H.-B Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships held in the Agganis Arena at Boston University February 25. The rowers participated in the junior division against a large number of both national and international competitors. They were cheered on by their teammates and coaches Pat Scott and Brittany Campbell.

The C.R.A.S.H.-B competition was started in the late 1970s by a group of U.S. Olympic and international rowers in the greater Boston area. It has since grown in scope and size, and is now ranked as one of the premier rowing challenges in the world. Since most crew races are either two- or six-kilometers in length, the format of the race has adapted to these standards and each rower must complete a two-kilometer course. The 2007 championships featured a total of over 1,900 rowers ranging in age from 14 to 86 years old. Team Great Britain, Team Germany, France, Australia, and other international clubs sent participants. Various U.S. states, including New York, California, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Indiana, and the District of Columbia, were also represented by high school, college, and club rowers.

Juniors Jordan Schnipke and Dan Child competed in the men’s heavyweight junior division against 205 other rowers. Schnipke finished with a time of 6:57.6, breaking seven minutes for the two-kilometer course, a major milestone in erg rowing. Child finished with a time of 7:13.9.

Mike Child and Scott Myslinski, members of the freshman class, rowed in the men’s lightweight junior division composed of 152 rowers. Child finished with a time of 7:27.3 and Myslinski earned a time of 7:40.5.

Taylor Cardosi, a junior, and Margaux Holley, a freshman, rowed in the women’s lightweight junior division against 93 competitors. Cardosi’s time was 8:11.7, followed closely by Holley at 8:16.4. Ally Cohen, a Bromfield junior, participated in the women’s heavyweight junior division with 219 other women, finishing at 7:54.2.

Bromfield’s participants were excited to complete their winter training by participating in this major event and are ready to get on the water for the spring racing season.
