The declaration of a “holy war” at the last selectmen’s meeting should be a major wake-up call to Harvard’s citizens that there is a local movement afoot to undermine the foundations of our community. Civility, freedom of speech, common sense, and the town meeting are not to be subjugated by a small bunch of angry people seeking to bring a wave of national partisan discontent into our local government process. For more that 275 years Harvard has been led by nonpartisan volunteers, focused solely on meeting the needs of the town, while managing to stay above the fray when national politics turned ugly.
The rhetoric expressed by national and local party leaders seeks only to divide our community, not bring us closer together. Angry voices bring no new ideas, no solutions or rational thought to address the issues we face locally. The town meeting or the board room is not the place for rancor and intimidation. It is the place where we come together—one person, one vote, one voice at a time—to debate the merits of the issues and define our future together.
