Philip Kuong, an eighth-grade student at Bromfield, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Dec. 23. Kuong defeated second-place finisher, Allison Rizzo, during the championship tiebreaker round of the Bee.

School winners from around the state, including Kuong, will now take a written test; top scorers from Massachusetts will be eligible to compete in the state Bee on April 1.

Earlier in December, 15 students won their way into the school-level Bee during preliminary classroom competitions. Participants included sixth-graders Alex Lee, Rebekah Lindsey, Riley Sennott, Kamryn Stecyk, and Eric Xing; seventh-graders Matty Banker, Bolek Myczkowski, Mark Schwiegershausen, Sarah Vandevaart, and Nick Wyman; and eighth-graders James Allen, Maddie Beckman-Ogut, Philip Kuong, Charles Mednieks, and Allison Rizzo.
