Bird Walk at Fruitlands
Fruitlands Museum and the Brookline Bird Club will host a morning bird walk led by local birder Pat White Saturday, July 9, at 7 a.m., starting from the top parking lot. Nesting birds will still be around, with good views of parents feeding fledglings: Indigo Bunting, Veery, Catbird, Wood Thrush, Baltimore Oriole, possibly meadowlarks. Night Hike at Wildlife Refuge
The staff of the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge will host a night hike on the Oxbow Friday, July 15, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. to explore nocturnal wildlife on the trails of the refuge. Hikers should plan to walk at least 3 miles. Bring bug spray, water, a headlamp, and wear appropriate shoes and clothing.
Oxbow Scavenger Hunt
Friends of the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge will sponsor a scavenger hunt Sunday, July 17, at 3 p.m. at the refuge. Participants can see how many listed items they can locate and use their camera to prove it. Small prizes will be awarded to the highest scorers. Photos can be entered in the Friends of the Oxbow’s photo contest, which ends on July 31. Rules are available at friendsoftheoxbownwr.org. The event is appropriate for all ages. It will be canceled in case of rain or extreme heat. Bring a drink and insect repellent. Long, light-colored pants are recommended. Nature Art Class at Oxbow
A local artist will hold a Nature Art Class Saturday, July 23, from 10 a.m to noon at Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge. The artist will show some of her favorite natural places to draw or paint and offer suggestions. Bring art supplies, seating, a drink, and insect repellent. Long, light-colored pants are recommended. Make Your Own Puppet
The Harvard Public Library will hold a puppet workshop for chidren ages 4 and older Tuesday, Aug. 2, from 3 to 4 p.m. Participants will use a kit from Folkmanis puppets to make a plush frog puppet to keep. The workshop is limited to 12. Register by calling 978-456-2381.
Robert Rivest, Comic Mime
Comic mime Robert Rivest will present Humorous Stories from Around the World Thursday, Aug. 4, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the library. His exploration of mime, movement, mythology, tall tales, and humorous stories will be full of audience participation. A student of Marcel Marceau, Robert trained for more than 10 years with internationally renowned masters of mime, dance, theater, and improvisation. The volunteer docents at the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton will lead free evening gallery talks for nine Thursdays, from July 7 through Sept. 1, each focusing on a different aspect of the museum’s collection. Stargazing
The monthly meeting of the Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston will offer an opportunity to stargaze Wednesday, July 27, at 8 p.m. at the Assabet Valley National Wildlife Refuge at 680 Hudson Road in Sudbury. Club members will set up a variety of telescopes and help guide attendees through the millions of celestial objects visible in the night sky. To help find your way, but not ruin the dark adaptation for those who are viewing through the telescopes, use a red LED flashlight or a flashlight covered in red cellophane. Organic Farming Association Summer Conference
The Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) 2011 Summer Conference will take place Aug. 12 through 14 at UMass-Amherst.
