In July, Nikki Margaretos and Jake Turchetta, along with other students from the United States, performed volunteer service work in the seaside village of Palmarin in Senegal, where they communicated in French and experienced African life. While in the small village, the students lived with host families and worked each day refurbishing the local school. Their journey included a brief stay in the capital city Dakar, as well as the city of Mbour.
