In a bittersweet knockout game against Maynard, Bromfield varsity field hockey clinched a 5-0 win on Friday, Oct. 17. It was the Trojans’ eighth shutout of the season. The team’s seniors shed tears after the match, having played their last game on the scenic field where they have competed for six or more years.
Bromfield’s offense easily dodged Maynard defenders, and the ball spent most of the game in Maynard’s half of the field. Blue and white dominated the first half, scoring four goals against Maynard. The first goal was scored by senior Aliza Maki on a deflect from senior Casey Russell in front of the net.
Bromfield scored its second goal off a penalty corner. Junior Lily Moore-Eissenberg received the ball at the top of the circle and sent it down the middle. Junior Maddie Ragno tapped the ball into the back of the net
Later in the first half, senior Colby Newsham stole the ball in the defensive end and wove through the Maynard defenders to take it down the field. As she approached the goal, she sent a pass across the circle to teammate Maki, who punched the ball into the net for the Trojans’ third goal of the game.
The fourth goal of the half was scored off another corner. Newsham received the ball and passed it into the circle to Ragno, who tapped it in for her second goal of the game.
Ahead at the half
At the half Bromfield was up 4-0 and continued to dominate the game. Maynard took no shots on Bromfield’s senior goalie Moira Morgan, while Bromfield took 13 shots on net. Maynard’s goalie made 13 saves, including one stellar save with her gloved hand after Russell sent the ball high.
The game ended when Ragno scored the fifth goal for the Trojans and her third goal that day.
As a tribute to the seniors’ last home game, Coach Sue Silver started 11 of her 12 seniors. At the forward line, Aliza Maki, Casey Russell, and Elizabeth Armstrong powered past Maynard’s players to the goal. Midfielders Diane LeRoy, Kathryn Hodskins (captain), and Jenny Specht maneuvered down the sidelines towards the 16-yard circle. Lindsay Kerr, Emma Keaney (captain), and Loren Beale as defenders stopped the Maynard offense from reaching sweeper Kyra Doher and goalkeeper Moira Morgan.
Another sound 5-0 defeat—this time of Tahanto—on Monday, Oct. 20, led the varsity girls to a 12-1-2 record. Also this week, they took on Littleton and St. Bernard’s in benefit games for Breast Cancer and Friedreich’s Ataxia, respectively. They will play in the Mid-Wachusett Division C playoffs the following weeks.
Julia Hoggins and Casey Russell are seniors at the Bromfield School. Russell is a member of the varsity hockey team.
