Despite a hard 4-0 loss to Groton-Dunstable on Saturday, Oct. 18, the girls’ varsity soccer team has maintained the top spot in the Midland Wachusett C League.
Bromfield fought hard in the first half of the game, but neither team was able to score. After halftime, however, the Trojans’ relentless game schedule began to catch up with them as their energy level dropped. Although some strong plays were made in the center midfield by junior Jackie Duckett, and on the left wing by freshman Sarah Moore, the team could not get past the Groton-Dunstable goalie.
Meanwhile, the Crusaders poured on the energy in the second half, peppering the Trojan net with shots. Goalie Meghanne Fitzsimmons made several spectacular saves, jumping up to punch the ball over the net on more than one occasion.
But eventually fatigue and the unfamiliar narrow Pond Road field led the Trojans to make mistakes, resulting in four goals by Groton-Dunstable.
A win against Tyngsborough
The day before, on Friday, Oct. 17, the Trojans faced off against Tyngsborough on the opponents’ turf and came home with the win they needed to qualify for the district playoffs.
The teams were well matched, and neither scored in the first half; but the Trojans were determined to score in the second. The team had a lot of positive energy on the field, with Fitzsimmons’ solid saves, freshman Jessy Andrews and Duckett fighting for the ball in the midfield, and sophomore Sarah Doben’s speed at forward.
The Trojans had several shots on the Tyngsborough net; and with about 25 minutes left on the clock, Moore passed the ball in to Doben, who powered it into the Tigers’ net, making the score 1-0.
Tyngsborough was determined to make it past the Bromfield defense, receiving a corner kick as their spectators loudly cheered them on. Emotions were running high, but the defense cleared the ball.
Bromfield kept up offensive pressure and strong defense, forestalling any further Tyngsborough attempts at their net and winning the game 1-0.
And another against Oakmont
Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, Oct. 15, the Trojans had an away game against Oakmont, which was also played on a turf field and also ended in a Bromfield win, this time with a score of 2-1.
Oakmont always has a tough team, and the Trojans were determined to prevail. The game was hard ought, and both of Bromfield’s goals were scored by junior Sophia Turchetta.
The first goal was off an awesome cross by Doben. Turchetta shot the ball, which was caught by the goalie, who then dropped it, allowing Turchetta to sprint in and score. The second goal was assisted by Andrews.
The Trojans have four games left in their regular season. They will play Gardner at home on Wednesday, Oct. 22, and Sutton at home on Friday, Oct. 24. On Saturday, Oct. 25, the Trojans will be away against Nipmuc, and they will end their regular season at home against Douglas on Monday, Oct. 27.
