After clinching a spot in the playoffs with back-to-back wins over Tyngsborough and Gardner, the Bromfield boys’ varsity soccer team lost 3-0 at Sutton on Friday, Oct. 24, dropping its record to 10-5-1 for the season.
Bromfield started the game with good defense, but turnovers kept them from making any offensive runs early on. Sutton put plenty of pressure on Trojan goalie Ben Cadman as he made three early saves, including one diving save. Unfortunately, Cadman’s efforts were for naught as Sutton’s Eric Bater scored the game’s first goal easily without an assist, making it 1-0 Sutton.
The field had experienced rain earlier, so the conditions were not in Bromfield’s favor. Bater took advantage of the Trojans’ slips on the field and scored another goal, assisted by James McCleery, making it 2-0 Sutton less than 10 minutes into the game. Bromfield had more defensive issues as turnovers continued to cost them. Cadman did his best to keep the Trojans in the game but ended up letting in a third goal from McCleery, assisted by Bater.
With a 3-0 lead, Sutton was cruising. Even with a few shot opportunities, the Trojans seemed heavily outmatched against the Sammies. Cadman had more work ahead of him as Sutton continued to be relentless on offense. The first half ended with Sutton on top 3-0.
The second half proved to be more eventful defensively as each team was able to keep the other from scoring. It turned into a battle as each tried to score at least one more goal. The game ended with Sutton ahead 3-0, with a 14-1-1 season record.
Bromfield played it’s last game of the season, Oct. 29 against Nashoba which ended scoreless, 0-0.
