On Friday, March 29, the Bromfield varsity boys lacrosse team played its first game in Marlborough, starting off the season on a positive note. The Bromfield Trojans kept the pressure on the Advanced Math and Science Academy Eagles, winning 10-8, bringing their record to 1-0. According to Bromfield’s athletic director, David Boisvert, “The boys lacrosse team has been a co-op team for close to eight years. We started the co-op with Maynard and Parker due to low numbers, and last year we added Ayer-Shirley.”
The game started quickly, with both teams racing for the lead, but it was Bromfield that pulled ahead early. Two players made 7 goals in the first half. Ayer-Shirley junior, captain, and attacker Joey Robinson scored a total of 4 goals. Maynard sophomore Sam Hills, who had the highest number of goals and assists last year, added 3 goals to Robinson’s 4. Ayer-Shirley eighth-grader Greg Canning scored twice in the game. Bromfield senior captain Ian Miller had a total of three assists. Aiden Young won 20 faceoffs, playing a key role in Bromfield’s victory.
Bromfield’s defense was also strong. While the Eagles did score 8 goals, Trojans goalkeeper Logan Reed held them to that, making 15 saves. According to Patrick Fredericksen, the team’s coach, saving 55 percent of the shots on net puts you at a great college goalkeeper level. Parker junior captain Henry Fredericksen managed to stop the Eagles’ leading player with his defensive skills, leaving the Eagle players scoreless.
The next game is Thursday, April 4, at 4 p.m. Bromfield will face off against Groton-Dunstable on the Lancaster fields by Kimball Farms.
