Bromfield’s boys and girls cross-country teams were runners-up in this year’s Division 3C championships, both placing second at the annual state qualifier held Saturday, Nov. 8, at Willard Field in Devens and both qualifying for the state championship Nov. 15.
Boys coach Marisa Steele said that Saturday’s matching second-place finishes were a first. The two teams were within five points of each other when their scores were tallied, the girls with 81 and the boys with 86. At the awards ceremony at 12:45 p.m., both teams, jubilant, stepped forward with their coaches to accept matching plaques, destined for the Bromfield trophy case.

Mount Greylock Regional (53 points), a perennial rival, was this year’s Division 3C girls champion, while Parker Charter (36 points) dominated the boys race, claiming four of the Top 10 places.
Four Bromfield runners won spots on the podium: senior Ben McWaters, senior Rosie Bradley, sophomore Abby Wool, and sophomore Kai Kemeza.
McWaters won silver among a field of 183 runners in the boys race with a second-place time of 16 minutes, 17.33 seconds. Nathaniel Henshaw, a senior from nearby Parker Charter, won the race with a time of 16:11.39.
Rosie Bradley was Bromfield’s top runner in the girls race, placing fourth with a time of 19:57.26, in a field of 159 runners. Emma Genovese, a ninth-grader from Lenox, won the race with a time of 19:18.59.

Saturday’s divisional races brought together 60 MIAA Division 3 cross-country teams and hundreds of athletes from across the state. The teams were sorted into three waves—3A, 3B, and 3C—and the top seven finishers from each group would qualify to compete in the statewide division championship this weekend.
These divisional meets have replaced the MIAA sectionals of prior years in which schools in the eastern, central, or western regions of the state competed against schools within their region. Wave 3C, in which the Bromfield boys and girls competed, included schools from across the state, as far west as Mount Greylock and Lenox and as far east as Georgetown. How the top teams from each wave compare will be determined at the Division 3 State Championship, Saturday, Nov. 15, at Devens.
