Three Bromfield athletes qualified for this year’s Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Meet of Champions, and all three won medals.
Senior Evelyn Wool placed sixth and junior Rosie Bradley seventh in the 2-mile, each setting a new personal record. Senior Vasilis Psathas tied with four other athletes for fifth place in the high jump.
The event was held June 5 and June 8 at Fitchburg State University, bringing together the state’s top athletes.
Wool’s time of 10 minutes, 57.89 seconds shaved 4 seconds off her previous personal best. Bradley’s 11:01.03 was a 10-second improvement over her previous personal record. The race was won by Greta Hammer of Needham with a time of 10:40.05.
Psathas won his fifth-place medal with a jump of 6 feet, 4 inches, the same height that won him a gold medal at the Division 6 state championship. The event was won by Derek Shimer of Shrewsbury with a jump of 6-06.00
“It was such an exciting race for both Evelyn and Rosie,” wrote their coach Marisa Steele in an email. “The field ran in a pack through the first mile. Then the top three runners separated from the seven-person chase pack that included Bradley and Wool.” Steele said. “By the last lap, the chase pack caught up to the third runner, and Evelyn was able to close hard, battling down the home stretch with three other girls, ultimately finishing just 0.15 seconds off fifth place. Rosie hung tough with a seventh-place finish.”
The girls achieved their personal records despite the 85-degree temperature in Fitchburg at race time, noted Steele. “No Bromfield girls have run that fast since Emily Jones, who ran 10:20 for the 2-mile in 2009.”
Although Wool qualified for the New England 2-mile championship and Nike Outdoor Nationals 5-km race, Steele told the Press she has decided to forego further racing this summer and prepare for her collegiate career at University of Maine. Bradley will compete in the 5-km at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon, on June 19. Psathas’ fifth-place finish gains him entry to the New England Championship this upcoming weekend, June 14, in New Britain, Connecticut.
