In the past week, police made 12 motor vehicle stops; four resulted in verbal warnings, six in written warnings or citations, and one in a civil citation, which carries a fine. Officers also issued or renewed a firearm permit, performed two well-being checks, and responded to two false burglar alarms.
Tuesday, Feb. 27
At 11:36 a.m. a South Shaker Road resident called to say she had caught a dog that was attacking her sheep. The animal control officer was notified, but the dog had already been returned to its owner, who will have to keep it contained. Several days later, police were informed the injured sheep had died. At 3:50 p.m. a resident came to the police station with concerns about receiving a suspicious phone call.
Wednesday, Feb. 28
At 8:18 a.m. police were informed about a collision on Route 2 eastbound, but the reporting person canceled the call. At 4:34 p.m. a caller reported some mattresses illegally dumped on Park Lane; the Department of Public Works was notified to remove them. At 9 p.m. someone phoned with suspicions about a group of teens described as lurking around a car near town center; police concluded the suspicions were unfounded. Just before midnight, the dispatcher was alerted to high winds that were causing road hazards townwide.
Thursday, Feb. 29
Between about 3 a.m. and 10 a.m., officers and the Department of Public Works dealt with fallen trees and branches on Littleton Road, Shaker Road, Tahanto Trail, Warren Avenue, Ann Lees Road, and South Shaker Road. At 6:20 a.m. someone came to the police station to report a possible case of identity theft. At 11:51 a.m. there was a collision on Route 2 eastbound with a possible injury, but the person refused transport to a hospital; state police had jurisdiction. The afternoon brought more calls about fallen trees, branches, and wires on Woodchuck Hill, Oak Hill, and Ann Lees roads, as well as Babbitt Lane. At 10:05 p.m. a caller reported suspicions about someone driving slowly along Ayer Road; police found the driver was a National Grid supervisor.
Friday, March 1
At 1:42 p.m. a caller told police a mailbox was overflowing with unclaimed mail at an empty residence on Ayer Road. Police notified the previous owner of the property, who planned to contact the post office about forwarding the mail.
Saturday, March 2
At 1:47 p.m. an officer responded to a call that someone was trespassing at the old observatory on Pinnacle Road and warned the person it was private property.
Sunday, March 3
At 1:46 p.m. a caller reported a loose Lab wandering on West Bare Hill Road, and the animal control officer was notified. At 4:44 p.m. a caller complained about a group of people riding dirt bikes and speeding on Madigan Lane.
Monday, March 4
At 10:51 a.m. someone called to say a driver heading south had run a stop sign in town center; the driver was intercepted by police in Bolton.
