Reader asks Press to follow up study of area fire stations

January 19, 2024

Thank you for the feature about fire stations in nearby towns, and the comparison to Harvard’s infrastructure in the Jan. 12 edition. It was very well done, including photographs and interviews with the fire chiefs.

I have questions along these four areas, and am hoping that perhaps the Press will have a follow-on article to address them:

  • What is the situation with the Devens Fire Station, along the same dimensions analyzed in Boxborough, Lancaster, Bolton, Ayer, Stow, and Harvard? And how is it funded?
  •  Of the 500 calls in 2023, roughly how many resulted in contaminated equipment that was washed and stored in a hot zone?
  •  Is there any suitable land near the town center that could be considered for acquisition, provided there was funding? Would the Fire Department consider land that was not in the town center?
  • What is the history in Harvard that leads it to be the only town without combined fire and EMS?

Again, thanks for a well researched article on a very important topic.
