The 2023 season is over for Bromfield’s six fall varsity teams, and new banners and trophies will soon be appearing in the school gym and front-hall trophy case. Here’s a quick rundown.
The girls cross-country runners are the 2023 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 3 state champions. Plus: Both the boys and the girls cross-country teams are 2023 Central Mass. Class C champions. (See story above.)
The golf team, though it did not qualify for the states, is the 2023 Midland-Wachusett C League champion.
While the boys soccer team lost its Central Mass. championship match to Sutton, the team returned to the MIAA Division 5 state tournament this month as No. 3 seed, where it advanced to the final four before losing to Douglas. (See story on page 20.)
The No. 18 seed girls soccer players had much to overcome this season, but they also advanced to the MIAA Division 5 states, winning their first match before falling to No. 2 seed Monson, the school that won this year’s state title. (See story on page 20.)
Finally, the 7-8-1 field hockey team nudged its way into the MIAA Division 4 state tournament as No. 31 seed, before losing to No. 2 seed Manchester-Essex in the round of 32.
Winter is at our doorstep and registration is open for boys and girls basketball, boys and girls swimming and diving, boys and girls Alpine skiing, and boys and girls indoor track. For ice hockey, Bromfield students may join a neighboring co-op team to compete in that sport, Ayer Shirley for the boys and Littleton for the girls. Tryouts begin Nov. 27. Competition gets underway Dec. 11.

Boys cross-country (league 5-0, all 5-0)
11/18 MIAA 2023 Division 3 state championship. Boys placed fifth among the 22 qualifying schools in their division. Freshman Ben McWaters, with a time of 16 minutes, 1.27 seconds, finished in 17th place among the 188 runners in the event.
Girls cross-country (5-0, 5-0)
11/18 MIAA 2023 Division 3 state championship. The Bromfield girls won this year’s championship, beating the 21 competing schools with 125 points. Junior Evelyn Wool was Bromfield’s top runner, finishing fifth among the 179 participating athletes with a time of 19:16.04.
Boys soccer (11-2, 14-4)
11/15 MIAA 2023 Division 5 tournament semifinal vs. Douglas. Bromfield lost 1-0 to Douglas when the game, scoreless after 90 minutes of regular play and two 10-minute overtime periods, was finally decided by penalty kicks. Douglas outshot Bromfield 3-2 to win this year’s trophy.
