Sports Roundup: November 17, 2023

November 17, 2023

Three Bromfield teams moved deeper into postseason play this week, with three varsity squads competing for a Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association state title.

Both the girls and boys cross-country teams have qualified to compete in the MIAA Division 3 state championship Nov. 18 at Devens. The girls placed first in their Division 3C sectional meet Nov. 11, while the boys placed fourth. To make it to states, a team must be among the top seven in its section.

The boys soccer continued its winning ways, beating No. 14 seed Mystic Valley Charter 8-0 on Nov. 6 and No. 6 seed Tahanto 2-1 on Sunday, Nov. 12, to make it to the Division 5 final four. As this week’s paper was being assembled, the team was preparing to play its semifinal match against No. 2 seed Douglas at Ayer Shirley on Wednesday, Nov. 15. See story on page 12 and watch for results of the Douglas game online at harvardpress.com.

In spite of a change of coaches and a plague of injuries, the girls won a spot in the Division 5 playoffs as the No. 18 seed. They won their round of 32 match against No. 15 seed Mystic Valley 7-3 but then fell to No. 2 Monson 7-0 in the round of 16 two days later. Watch for our season wrap-up in our Nov. 24 issue.

As fall season comes to an end, we’re making plans for winter sports coverage: boys and girls basketball, boys and girls swimming and diving, and boys and girls indoor track. If you’d like to help, either as a reporter or someone to record match, game, and meet results, please write to John Osborn, acting sports editor, at editor@harvardpress.net.
