With the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association no longer hosting sectional meets, the Central Massachusetts Athletic Directors Association has once again stepped in to fill the gap. Regular season for all Central Massachusetts teams ended this week, with the remaining two weeks of May set aside for championship playoffs. Wins and losses in tournament play will count towards a team’s season record, and those records, an element in MIAA’s power rankings, will determine which teams will earn spots in MIAA’s state tournament. If a team loses its first-round match, it is guaranteed one additional consolation game to complete its season.
The Central Mass. boys and girls tennis championships were scheduled to begin Thursday this week and end with finals next Friday, May 26. The girls are the No. 1 Class C seed and will play their first match at home against No. 8 David Prouty May 22 at 6 p.m. The boys are the No. 2 Class C seed and will play No. 7 West Boylston at home on the same day at 3:30 p.m.
Central Mass. tournaments for girls lacrosse and baseball were set to begin next week. The baseball squad did not make it into the eight-team Class D tournament bracket, but will play the first of two non-playoff games against Advanced Math and Science Academy May 26. Its second game has not has not yet been announced.
The girls lacrosse team is the No. 8 seed in the Class A Central Mass. tournament and will play its quarterfinal match against number 1 seed Algonquin on May 23.
Meanwhile the boys and girls outdoor track and field teams were in the midst of their sectional meets. Their Central Mass. championship meets were held at the new Ayer Shirley Regional athletic field complex last Saturday, May 13, and both teams competed in this year’s Midland Wachusett D League meet Thursday, May 18. MIAA division and state meets get underway later this month.
