Thank you to the Harvard Press for sharing a picture last week highlighting that the HES solar is up and running and producing enough electricity to meet 95% of the needs of the building. It was possible due to the leadership of Brian Smith, the chair of the Energy Advisory Committee, and David Fay, who worked endlessly with the installer, Solect, and National Grid to get this done.
This was a long process with a lot learned along the way. Mostly, our grid is not as ready as it needs to be for electrification, but hopefully it is getting there. Electrification is where things are heading. Around town you see a growing number of electric vehicles, houses that are converting to ground source or air source heating and cooling systems, and solar installations on homes and land.
The Harvard Climate Initiative Committee is writing a climate action plan that we hope will get us closer to the state’s 2050 carbon neutral goals.
