Girls are Mid-Wach League champions; coed score tops the swimming/diving competition

Bromfield’s girls co-op swim and dive team topped off an undefeated season by claiming the league championship title last week. The boys and girls teams combined score was also the best in the Midland-Wachusett League. Divers competed Feb. 2 at Sudbury’s Atkinson swimming pool, and swimmers faced off the next day at Tantasqua Regional High School.

The league meet brought together 12 teams from across central Massachusetts to compete over two sessions, due to COVID-19 precautions. The girls scored 403 points, to put them first, and the boys scored 131 points to land seventh, behind Algonquin Regional High School (406.5), Shrewsbury High School (284), Westborough High School (227), Wachusett Regional High School (202), Grafton Co-op (164), and the Advanced Math & Science Academy (154).

Divers Lily Tonole, a junior from Bromfield, and Annika Rodriquenz, a Bromfield sophomore, took the top two places in a field of five athletes. Tonole’s score of 263.55 earned her the individual championship title, and Rodriquenz was runner-up with 202.75. Both athletes qualified for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Association sectional and state meets.

Several swimmers also took top places at the Thursday event. Ayer Shirley senior Lorelei Folger took first in the 100-yard butterfly and second in the 200-yard individual medley. Littleton sophomore Ella Bergeron cut four seconds off her previous best in the 100 backstroke to earn second, and Ayer Shirley junior Sierra Quinty was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke. All four performances earned spots at the state championship. Bergeron also took third in the 50 freestyle, and Ayer Shirley freshman Gracie Hanss was third in the 100 freestyle.

Both relay teams earned first and qualified for states. Bergeron, Quinty, Folger, and Hanss posted 1:58.92 in the 200-yard medley relay, and Ayer Shirley junior Lilly Blouin, Hanss, Bergeron, and Folger swam 3:58.25 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Bromfield’s Vance Petrossi, a freshman, played an important role for the boys team Thursday. He placed fourth in the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke and swam on the eighth-place 200 medley relay team alongside Bromfield juniors Tate Brown, Jack Babcock, and Eli Labbe. Babcock also swam to seventh in the 100 butterfly.

Brown, Labbe, and Petrossi all returned alongside Bromfield sophomore Ryan Donahoe in the 400 freestyle relay to place seventh.

Several athletes qualified for the sectional meet on Feb. 13, where the teams competed for a championship title, and individuals had a final chance at a state qualifying time. Coach Sabiha Madraswalla said that Folger and Tonole are highly ranked. Folger has a shot at an individual title in the 100 butterfly, while Tonole is in contention for first in the 1-meter dive.

On the boys side, Petrossi has come close to the state qualifying time in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, and Madraswalla said he has the drive to shave both times down and make it to states.
