Swimmers and divers from the co-op team of Bromfield, Littleton High School, and Ayer Shirley High School added another win to their season record in a meet against Nashoba Regional High School Jan. 15. The girls put up a fight in several close races and beat the Wolves 103.5-76.5. The boys faced a small team and finished the day 101-19.
The Wolves proved worthy competitors on the girls’ side. Ayer Shirley senior Lorelei Folger finished the 100-yard butterfly with a healthy lead and state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 3.09 seconds, but a battle for second resulted in a tie between Bromfield junior Adaline Boissy and Nashoba’s Emma Reiner. Each finished in 1:12.41 and split the points for second and third, resulting in the half points in the final team score.
Ayer Shirley junior Sierra Quinty and Abby Eastman from Nashoba fought to the wall in the 100 breaststroke. Quinty finished one-tenth of a second ahead of Eastman, to claim first and qualify for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) sectional tournament.
Coach Sabiha Madraswalla highlighted Annika Rodriquenz’s performance in the 1-meter dive. The Bromfield sophomore is a third-year swimmer for the team but is diving for the first time this season. Her second-place finish and score of 202.5 was a step toward qualifying for the MIAA state meet. MIAA rules require divers to meet a qualifying standard twice before earning a slot at a postseason competition. Rodriquenz will need to meet the mark again to secure her slot at states, but the dive was her second time hitting the sectional standard.
Bromfield and Ayer Shirley athletes swept the 200-yard individual medley. Juniors Boissy from Bromfield and Lilly Blouin and Quinty, both from Ayer Shirley, swam a close race, finishing within three seconds of one other to claim the top three slots.
A 200-yard-freestyle relay team of Littleton sophomore Ella Bergeron, Boissy, Blouin, and Folger took first and qualified for sectionals, but the 200-medley and 200-freestyle relays each took second.
The Bromfield boys had numbers on their side, as the Wolves brought only three swimmers to the meet. This meant Nashoba could not field any relays, which score the most points. Despite this, the Wolves put up a worthy fight, claiming first in three events.
The teams faced Gardner High School Jan. 26, but results were not available as of press time. They are scheduled to compete again Jan. 28 in a meet against Wachusett Regional High School.
